The attached photo was taken of my half-Cherokee grandmother, Cora Ona Hanna Caudill and her unnamed pet dog. Sadly, “Mom” died on December 2, 1992 at the age of 91. She was born August 5, 1901 in Delaware District, Indian Territory. The photo was taken when she was about five years old. Indian Territory became the State of Oklahoma on November 16, 1907. Her great-grandmother, Charlotte Ratler and her great-grandfather, Tonniette Ketcher, plus Charlotte’s parents, Tahyahnawhunle Ratler and his wife, Dahne, walked the Trail of Tears from North Carolina/Georgia to northeastern Oklahoma, and are buried under the waters of Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees.
