In 1899, Al (Albert Edward) Cruger of Peekskill, NY, married Ellen J. Durning, who was born in Oregon although her father was from New York. They had two sons, George Durning and Charles Albert. Ellen died in 1904. Six years later Al, who at the time was Peekskill’s Village Clerk (later to become the newly chartered city’s Commissioner of Finance), married Grace M. Hilliard of Ossining, New York. (Her father had to the U.S. from England in 1849 and married a New York girl.) They had two sons, Edward James (my father), and Harold Hilliard. This photo has no documentation, but my suspicion is that it was made during Al and Grace’s courtship and that their boat was traversing Lake Oscawana near Peekskill. They certainly look happy.
